Welch, the Liverpool jeweller who set Wedgwood cameos in precious metals. It would make a wonderful collection for yourself or a sweet gift for someone you care about. Some background information on Wedgwood Jasperware. Jasperware, or jasper ware, is a type of pottery first developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. Usually described as stoneware, it has an unglazed matte "biscuit" finish and is produced in a number of different colors, of which the most common and best known is a pale blue that has become known as Wedgwood Blue. Named after the mineral jasper for marketing reasons, the exact Wedgwood formula remains confidential, but analyses indicate that barium sulphate is a key ingredient.
It has been a beloved collectible by the Georgians and Victorians. Back in the old days men adorned their coats with large, gaudy jasper buttons, their shoes with jasper-set buckles. Women decorated their costumes with brooches and dress-buckles, while wearing bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and lockets, all inset with Wedgwood cameos. Most antique items made by Wedgwood that survived till today are kitchen ware or vases, which makes a piece of Wedgwood jewelry especially made with black jasper rare and highly collectible. Size: 1 1/2 (Brooch Diameter).
