Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for an ornate 19th century French cast iron mechanical clockwork rotisserie, c.

The rotisserie is in three sections and includes a cast iron case with an embossed decorated top with lift handle on top, decorative tin lift sides and a fancy base with claw feet. The case holds an interior brass clock works with fly wheel and exposed drive gears and has winding key on the back. The tin sides lift to expose toe interior clock works. One side of the case has two clamp attachments for holding the hand forged spit at two different levels for cooking. The clock works causes the spit to turn in circles for even cooking.

The single hand forged steel spit fits into a cast iron stand with numerous spit hooks/slots and tripod base. There is a bell mechanism that rings to alert the cook that it was time to rewind the spring. The purpose of these antique spit jacks was to automatically slowly turn the spit of roasting meat at hearth level without the need of it being turned by hand.

A cast iron or copper pan was generally placed below the spit to collect meat drippings. Case measures 13" high (not including handle), 14 3/4" high (including handle), 8 1/4" wide and 6 1/2" deep (at feet). Spit measures 20" long and 3 3/4" wide (at widest). The tripod spit stand measures 13" high and 5" wide at base. Combined weight is 10.6 pounds. These fancy French cast iron mechanical rotisseries are seldom found in good condition and complete. This one appears to be in very good to excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. The clock works appear to be in good condition and although they probably need cleaning, the works do turn the spit and the bell mechanism also works. There is a level on the bottom of the case you can press to turn off the bell.
